Terms of use — Dead or Alive
Last updated: November 3, 2026.
1. The game
Dead or Alive (“Mort ou Vif” in French) is a free general-knowledge game: guess whether a celebrity is dead or alive. It is offered as is, for fun, and may change, be interrupted or change its rules at any time.
- The information (statuses, dates, anecdotes) comes from Wikidata and Wikipedia. It is updated regularly, but may contain errors or not yet reflect a very recent death.
- Free, no purchase at all: the game sells nothing. There is no payment, no subscription, no virtual currency to buy, hence no general terms of sale. No prize and no real winnings are to be won: leaderboards and duels have a game stake only.
- No advertising is displayed to date. If that changes, these terms and the privacy policy will be updated beforehand.
- Publisher and host: see the game's legal notice (Profile › Legal notice & sources).
2. Your account
- It is optional: it serves to keep your collection. You create it with “Continue with Google” or “Continue with an e-mail” (a 6-digit code is sent to you), from age 15: by creating your account, you declare that you are 15 or older (a checkbox; we neither ask for nor keep your date of birth). Under 15, play without an account.
- One account per person. You are responsible for access to your Google account or your mailbox, and you share your sign-in code with nobody.
- Nickname: 3 to 20 characters. Forbidden: insults, hateful or discriminatory remarks, impersonation (including that of a celebrity), advertising. A nickname that breaks these rules may be changed or the account suspended.
- An account with no activity for 2 years (no sign-in, no session reopened) is deleted automatically, with its data (see the privacy policy).
- You can delete your account at any time from the game (Profile). Deletion is final: it erases your profile, your collection, your challenge and duel scores, your friends list, your requests and your blocks.
- Public leaderboard: your nickname and your daily challenge scores appear in the leaderboards. They are visible to everyone, including visitors without an account, from the web. In a duel, your nickname and scores are visible to anyone who has its link. Choose a nickname that does not reveal who you are (no full name, address or number). To have a nickname or a score removed or changed, write to [email protected] (or report it from the leaderboard): removal within 48 h.
3. The collection
- Cards are won by playing, according to the rules shown in the game (chance depending on the score, bonus of the day…).
- Cards are game items with no monetary value whatsoever. They cannot be bought, sold or exchanged for real money.
- A card's rarity is an automatic calculation, based only on measures of fame: the number of languages in which the person has a Wikipedia article and the number of page views of that article over a recent period. It measures neither the value, nor the talent, nor the importance, nor the influence of a person, and takes no account of their career, their past or their actions. A “common” person is not less esteemed than a “legendary” one: they are simply looked up less. The publisher may adjust the rarity of some cards to balance the game. As page views can change, rarity may be recalculated, and a card may then change rarity.
- A card may be withdrawn from the game, for example at the request of the person represented or their heirs. It then disappears from all collections, without compensation.
4. Friends, duels and reports
- Friends: a friendship requires the other person to accept your request. You can remove a friend or block a nickname at any time (Profile › Friends); a blocked person can no longer find you, send you a friend request or invite you to a duel.
- Duels: a duel gathers up to 50 players around the same rounds. You join by a link or by a friend's invitation (nothing to accept: you can leave the duel at any time). A duel is played in 3 rounds; it ends when all its players have played them, and disappears with its scores 7 days after its last activity. At the end of a duel, a player can start a new one with the same players: they are added to it and notified.
- Behavior: no insults or harassment, including through repeated friend requests or invitations after a block; no use of nickname search to collect or guess other people's nicknames.
- Reporting: the “Report” button of a nickname (leaderboard, friend request) opens your e-mail app with a message ready for [email protected]. We remove or rename a nickname that breaks these rules within 48 h, and may suspend the account concerned.
5. Fair play
The following are forbidden:
- robots, scripts and tools that play for you;
- deliberately exploiting a bug (report it to [email protected] instead, thanks!);
- modifying the game or its exchanges with the server to obtain cards;
- multiple accounts meant to distort the game.
Cards obtained this way may be withdrawn, and the account suspended or deleted depending on the seriousness.
6. Celebrities and content
- The people shown have no connection with Dead or Alive and do not endorse it.
- It is only a game. The cards gather people known to all, including historical or controversial figures. Their presence in the game, their rarity or their place in a collection is neither a tribute nor an endorsement: rarity reflects their fame (audience on Wikipedia), never a judgment. The publisher fully distances themselves from their actions and opinions.
- Their photos come from Wikimedia Commons, under a free license, with the author and license shown on each card.
- The anecdotes come from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0 license), selected and reworded.
- Mistake, or content that concerns you? Write to [email protected]: we correct or remove within 48 h.
- The game itself (concept, design, texts, code, music) belongs to its publisher.
7. Liability
The game is provided as is, with no guarantee of availability. To the extent permitted by law, the publisher is not liable for losses linked to an interruption or an error, including the loss of a collection. Account data is backed up with care, but the game remains a beta.
8. Personal data
See the privacy policy.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by French law. In case of a dispute, an amicable solution will be sought first: write to [email protected]. If you are a consumer, you may also use a consumer mediator free of charge.
10. Changes
These terms may change with the game: the date of the last update is shown at the top of this page. Continuing to use the game after a change means accepting the new terms.
